Description
Reduce Adhesion and Stick PTFE Film Tape 5491 is a thicker version of our 5490 film tape that offers a high strength backing that resists curling when unwound from the roll. It lies flatter than typical skived PTFE film tapes and creates a more uniform non-skid surface. The thicker backing extends the useful life of the tape against abrasion and wear. We developed this tape as a quick and easy solution to reduce friction between moving surfaces. It serves as an anti-stick or easy-release medium between surfaces where pressure, temperature changes and other factors may create a measure of adhesion. Recommended Applications Roller Wrap Wire harnessing Squeak reduction Noise reduction Insulating Lining Shielding Protecting Composite bonding Flash breaking Performance under Stress We've designed this 6.7 mil PTFE tape to withstand a wide selection of challenging work environments. Applying PTFE Film Tape 5491 can help improve surface movement and eliminate squeaks and rattles and reduce machine noise. PTFE is chemical resistant and can be used as a temporary chemical barrier. The tape can also function under a wide range of temperatures, from -65°F/-54°C to 500°F/260°C, making it suitable under a number of tough and stressful applications. The Science behind PTFE Tape Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic material used in a variety of industries and applications to reduce the coefficient of friction. PTFE is used as a non-stick coating for frying pans and other cookware because of its non-stick property as well as high heat resistance. Its non-conductivity makes it an excellent insulating material for electrical applications. It is very non-reactive to numerous chemicals, partly due to the strength of carbonâfluorine bonds; making it very effective in containers and pipework for reactive and corrosive substances. PTFE reduces friction, wear and energy efficiency of machinery. Because of its low friction, PTFE is used in industrial applications where sliding action of parts is required, such as with bearings, gears, slide plates, etc. In these applications, it delivers significantly better performance than nylon and acetal. 3M has taken this versatile compound through an extrusion process to create a thin film, then paired the film with adhesive to make its PTFE tape. Innovative, high performance 3M PTFE tapes are reliable, durable and reduce friction.
